Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a secure, encrypted connection between a remote Windows or Mac computer device and the Seattle University internal network. It allows access to specific secure internal systems or data that is not accessible directly from the Internet. If you use shared drives (i.e. T and P Drives), Colleague, RDP to your desktop computer on campus, access servers on campus, access InformSU SSRS reports, or use the EMS desktop application, you will need to download and use the VPN.  The Virtual Private Network is available for all Seattle University faculty and staff. At this time, students are restricted from using the VPN and should use the VDI if they need to access university resources. Access Some examples when a VPN is required include remote access to

  • a shared drive, such as T: or P:

  • Colleague

  • your campus computer via Remote Desktop

  • campus servers

  • InformSU SSRS reports

  • EMS room scheduling service

Seattle University uses the GlobalProtect vpn client. It is available for any Seattle University faculty or staff member. It is available to students when required by a specific class. Access for vendors is granted on a case-by-case bases. Please contact the Service Desk at servicedesk@seattleu.edu to request access.

Free to use on business or personal workstations by current Seattle University Faculty and Staff. This software requires admin rights to be installed on a university-owned computer. If you do not have admin rights, please email the Service Desk and request a virtual appointment for a technician to assist you remotely. You will be prompted to enroll in MFA when you download the GlobalProtect application. Please follow the prompts. You will be required to re-authenticate via MFA every 12 hours when using the VPN.

Accessing the VPN

The VPN software, the GlobalProtect client, is supported on Windows 7 or later and Apple Mac OS 10.10 or later. It is not currently supported on mobile devices. It is very important to follow the step-by-step instructions in the Software Setup Guide when installing the VPN software on your computer. basis. GlobalProtect can be installed on both ITS-managed computers as well as personal computing devices. Faculty, staff, and students must be enrolled in Microsoft multifactor authentication (MFA) to use GlobalProtect. 

GlobalProtect can be used on current operating system versions of

  • Windows computers*, including ARM and UWP

  • Apple MacOS computers*

  • Apple iPad and iPhones

  • Android devices

  • certain Linux operating systems

Devices running an unsupported operating system, identified as no longer supported by the software manufacturer, cannot use GlobalProtect.
