Adapters

Often, one or more adapters will be available for devices without HDMI ports. Below are some examples of common adapters:

HDMI to usbc.JPEG
HDMI to USB-C - most newer laptops have USB-C ports capable of transmitting video

HDMI to mini dp.JPEG
HDMI to mini displayport - older laptops may have this type of port

If you need an adapter that isn’t available in this room, please contact ITS.

Remote

A remote control is included for powering the projector on and off*. Below are some examples of projector remotes:

*Note - for MCC 207 (Library Computer lab), please see a librarian for the projector remote

Instructions

  • Find the HDMI cord and plug it into the HDMI port on your laptop or other device.

  • If needed, use one of the available adapters to plug into a USB-C or mini displayport port (see here for examples)

  • Turn on the projector using the available remote*. The power button should always be at the top (see here for examples).

    • If there is no remote, or the remote doesn’t seem to work,

  • The projector image should now be showing content from your laptop. If this is not the case, see the common issues section below.

  • Please remember to turn off the projector when finished!

Common Issues

Below are several common issues that you may experience with this setup, and bulleted suggestions for troubleshooting them

Projector won’t turn on

Computer not displaying on projector

  • Check the HDMI connection to your device, and if applicable, check the other end of the HDMI cord connected to a wall HDMI port.

    • We recommend unplugging the cable completely and plugging back in, ensuring a firm connection

    • If you are using an adapter such as HDMI to USB-C, check its connections with the HDMI cord and your device

    • If using a windows 11 laptop, your screen image should briefly shrink and return to normal, confirming that a display has been connected.

  • If using windows, log in to your profile, then bring up the project menu by pressing [win] + [P] on your keyboard. We recommend selecting “duplicate,” if it is not already selected

  • Check the projector input: Some remotes have a “source” or “input” button (examples shown below) that you can press multiple times to cycle through inputs, while others have individual buttons for each input. The correct input will be HDMI, so select that one (or try all HDMI inputs, if there are more than one).

    • we recommend checking projector inputs after trying further troubleshooting steps if the problem persists, unless you can see on the projector which HDMI input has a cable plugged into it

    • further steps will not work if the projector has been switched off of the correct input.

Projector doesn’t show the same content as my computer screen

Both windows and mac os allow the user to have two separate desktops when using multiple displays. If this happens, and you prefer to have your laptop screen and projector showing the same thing, we recommend doing the following:

  • On Windows: Log in to your profile, then bring up the project menu by pressing [win] + [P] on your keyboard. We recommend selecting “duplicate,” if it is not already selected

  • On mac os: Log into your profile, then use the shortcut [Command] + [fn] + [F1].

    • If this doesn’t work, try [Command] + [F1]

Can’t hear audio playing on computer

  • Check the volume level on your computer and on whatever application you are using to play audio (i.e. youtube, spotify, or other media playing app)

  • If you hear sound on your laptop speakers but want to hear it on the projector/room speakers instead, see the following section.

  • If you still don’t hear sound at all, make sure the volume is up on the projector using the remote control

Audio plays back on my laptop speakers instead of the projector speakers

If the projector is showing the image from your laptop but audio is playing back on your laptop speakers, you can try the following:

  • On windows: see this link to learn how to change audio outputs in windows 11. The correct audio output will likely have the projector model in the name.

  • On mac os: Click the volume icon on the top right menu bar, then select the correct audio output (see image below). The correct audio output will likely have the projector model in the name.
