Included technology

MCC 309 is a music production lab. The instructor station features an iMac computer connected to a projector display to display content to the class. There is also an electronic piano keyboard and a Focusrite audio interface for recording audio on the computer. Both the keyboard and computer’s headphone audio output are connected to a 4 channel mixer, which is connected to a set of PA speakers.

These instructions focus on basic functionality of the computer, projector, and computer audio.

Instructions

  • Wake up the computer by pressing a key on the keyboard or wiggling the mouse.

    • If the computer doesn’t wake up, press the power button on the backside of the computer in the bottom right corner (bottom left corner if facing the screen and reaching around)

    • The image from the iMac should shortly be projecting at the front of the room

    • If needed, pull down the screen at the front of the room and let go when the image is fully shining on it

  • See the following linked sections if you have difficulties with these steps:

  • You are now ready to use the audiovisual equipment! Please remember to turn off the projector and log out of the computer when finished

Common Issues

Below are several common issues that you may experience with this equipment, and bulleted suggestions for troubleshooting them. If the listed steps do not help, please contact ITS for more help.

Projector won’t turn on

  • Change the batteries in the remote, if possible, and try to turn the projector on again

Projector image is not showing content from computer

  • Check the display cable connections - This imac is connected to the projector via a USB-C to HDMI cable adapter plugged into the back of the imac screen, which is connected to an HDMI cable plugged into a wall port. Check that all of these cables are securely plugged in.

  • Check the projector input: The projector should be on an HDMI input. Press the “source” button repeatedly to cycle through inputs - be sure to check every input labeled as HDMI

    • we recommend checking projector inputs after trying further troubleshooting steps if the problem persists, unless you can see on the projector which HDMI input has a cable plugged into it

    • further steps will not work if the projector has been switched off of the correct input.

Projector doesn’t show the same content as my computer screen

Mac os allow the user to have two separate desktops when using multiple displays. If you find the computer in this configuration, and you prefer to have your computer screen and projector showing the same thing, we recommend trying the following :

Log into your profile, then use the shortcut [Command] + [fn] + [F1] to switch to mirrored displays

  • If this doesn’t work, try [Command] + [F1]

No sound from computer

Since this classroom is a music technology lab, we will assume that the instructor is familiar with the mixer and speaker setup and focus more on the computer settings.

  • Check that the audio output cable is properly connected to the imac’s headphone output

  • Check the default audio output device on the imac, whether using the headphone output or a USB audio device

    • See here for instructions on how to do this

    • Some software requires you to select an audio output device independent of the system default, so be sure to check this if applicable

  • Check the main volume level on the imac, as well as the volume in whatever audio program you are using, if applicable

  • If everything above seems to be correct and the settings of the speakers and mixer are correct, please contact ITS for more help.
