GlobalProtect V6 Mac Setup Guide and Software

This software is compatible with Mac OS X versions 10.15 through 14.x. The installation process below is for requires you have Administrator access to your computer in order to install. Users with ITS-managed Windows computers should use the Company Portal to install or update their GlobalProtect software.

  1. Verify the Mac Security settings will allow the GlobalProtect software installation; Mac OS 13.x and newer

    1. From the Apple menu select System Settings > Privacy & Security in the sidebar; you may have to scroll down. ‘Allow applications downloaded from’ must be set to App Store and identified developers

    2. Scroll to Extensions and Enable third-party extensions

  2. Verify the Mac Security settings will allow the GlobalProtect software installation; Mac OS 12.x and later

    1. From the Apple menu select System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General. Allow apps must be App Store and identified developers. To change the setting click the lock, enter the local Administrator-equivalent user name and password, select App Store and identified developers, then click the lock to prevent further changes.

    2. Close the Security & Privacy window

  3. Download the GlobalProtect client by clicking on the software package shown below after step 4.

    1. Double click the GlobalProtect.pkg file in your Downloads folder. The GlobalProtect Installer screen appears.

    2. Follow the prompts to install GlobalProtect. If you receive a system extension block prompt go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General  and select Allow

  4. If the Installation Complete window appears click Close. If any errors are displayed open a support request by emailing servicedesk@seattleu.edu, report the error you received during the GlobalProtect for Mac installation, and list your Mac OS version.

 

Run the GlobalProtect client, first time setup

  1. At the Welcome to GlobalProtect window enter the portal address remote.seattleu.edu and click Connect. If you enter anything else in the portal address window you will be prompted to re-enter the portal address. If you click Connect again with an incorrect portal address the value will be saved and you’ll have to clear the portal setting by clicking the three lines at the upper right of the GlobalProtect window, select Settings, select the incorrect portal entry and select Delete.

  2. Enter your SeattleU userID in the form username@seattleu.edu when prompted

    1. Enter your password when prompted

    2. Complete the multi-factor authentication when prompted

    3. Upon successful authentication the Welcome to the Remote Portal page appears. Your computer is now connected to the internal SeattleU network. You can close the Welcome page.

Run the GlobalProtect client, post setup

  1. Click the GlobalProtect icon in the upper right menu bar

  2. The GlobalProtect client caches your username and password after the first successful connection. Upon clicking Connect the application will complete the first authentication with the previous user ID. If the multi-factor authentication period for the user ID has expired (typically 12 hours) you will receive the additional authentication prompt, otherwise no login prompts will appear.

Note: The GlobalProtect client does not initiate any network drive mappings such as the T: drive. If you need to access internal SeattleU shared resources that require mapped drives then you must map those drives at your remote computer after you connect with the vpn client. Instructions for mapping network drives from Windows or Mac systems can be found at www.seattleu.edu by Searching for “map network drive”.

How to Disconnect the GlobalProtect client

  1. Click the GlobalProtect icon in the upper right menu bar

  2. Click Disconnect

How to Find the IP Address of your connected GlobalProtect VPN session

  1. Run the GlobalProtect client

  2. Click the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines) at the upper right of the GlobalProtect window, select Settings, then select Connection. 

  3. The Assigned local IP value is the IP address of your session

How to Change the Login ID in the GlobalProtect client (when multifactor authentication is required)

  1. Open the GlobalProtect client and click the disconnect button

  2. Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com in a browser window

  3. Click on the "Sign out everywhere" link at the bottom of the panel that contains your name, email, and phone number

  4. Select the account you want to be signed out of Microsoft applications. Be aware this action will log you out of all authenticated Microsoft applications including email.

  5. Open the GlobalProtect client and click the connect button. You should be prompted with the Microsoft “Pick an account” page to select a different account. If presented with the “Enter password” page for the previous account used in GlobalProtect click the left arrow next to username@seattleu.edu to choose a different account.
