This document outlines the steps to update your existing MFA settings to use the Microsoft Authenticator app if you are currently using text messages or phone calls.

Instructions

  1. Open a web browser and go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup.

  2. Click on + Add method.

  3. Select the Authenticator app option from the drop down list, and then select Add.

  4. Select Download now to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, and then select Next. For more information about how to download and install the app, see Download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  5. Remain on the Set up your account page while you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device.

  6. On the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone, click the plus + icon to add an account, and click Work or School Account. In the popup window select Scan a QR code.

  7. On the setup screen on your computer, click Next to view the QR code. Then, scan the QR code with the reader that should appear on the Microsoft Authenticator app. If the QR code reader can't read the code, you can select Can't scan the QR code and manually enter the code and URL into the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  8. Select Next on the Scan the QR code page on your computer. Then, a notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, to test your account.

  9. Approve the notification from the Microsoft Authenticator app on your smart phone, and then select Next on the page on your computer. Your security info should now be updated to use the Microsoft Authenticator app.

  10.  To make the Microsoft Authenticator app the default method for multi-factor authentication, select Change next to the Default sign-in method information.

  11. Choose Microsoft Authenticator - notification from the list of available methods. If you're not using the Microsoft Authenticator app, select the Authenticator app or hardware token option.

  12. Select Confirm and the default method used for sign-in will be set to the Microsoft Authenticator app option.
