Change a Group's Privacy Setting

When you create a Group for Teams or SharePoint, the privacy setting can be set to Private or Public. In almost all cases, it should be left at the default of Private.

A Public privacy setting means the Team or SharePoint site is accessible to anyone in the Seattle University. If there is any doubt, it should be Private.

If a Team or SharePoint site is Public:

  • All files are accessible to everyone.

  • Files will appear in everyone’s search results.

  • Anyone can join the Team or SharePoint site.

How to view the current setting:

  1. SharePoint puts the privacy setting on every page. If you main interface is Teams, you can view the SharePoint page from the Team by clicking the in the upper-right and choosing Open in SharePoint:

  2. Once at the SharePoint site, the privacy is in the header of every page:

How to change the privacy setting:

  1. Navigate to the SharePoint site, using the step above if you are currently in Teams.

  2. Click the Gear Icon, then Site information.

  3. Use the Privacy settings drop-down menu, then click Save.
