Enable Office file protections

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint offer file-level security options, including open as read-only and password protect. Here’s the list of options, and what they do.

Instructions

Seattle University students, faculty, and staff can apply extra security options to their Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.

These file-level options are accessible in Microsoft 365 office apps, via the Protect Document menu.

  1. Open a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint document

  2. Click File > Info > Protect Document

  3. Choose the option that’s right for you!

Tip: “Always Open Read-Only” doesn’t prevent editing, but it does ensure that when a person first opens a file they are aware it is in Read-only format. A recipient can choose to open an editable copy instead. To restrict editing, use the “Restrict Editing” option.
